History

Memorial University is Newfoundland and Labrador’s only university, so it has a special obligation to the people of this province. The university was established as a memorial to the Newfoundlanders who lost their lives during active service in the world wars and serves to honour that great sacrifice through educating the people of the province.

Food & beverage

The University Centre building is home to a food court on the third floor.  Pizza, subs, fries, and homestyle treats are available there.  The Breezeway bar is located on the first floor.

Bitters is the Graduate Students' Union restaurant and lounge located in Feild Hall.

Aramark provides food services around campus various cafeteria-style kiosks and cafés.

Bloomin’ Teapot at the Botanical Gardens is an authentic English Tearoom serving soups, sandwiches and all-day weekend breakfast.

Vending machines are located in the laundry room in each residence hall.

Grounds & Gardens

The university is located within a large 14 square kilometre urban park.  Pippy Park offers views of both the city and the Atlantic Ocean and has year-round recreational opportunities.  In addition to numerous groomed and wilderness-style running, walking and biking trails, visitors enjoy both a nine-hole and an 18-hole golf course, a driving range, and a public access campground.

The Memorial University Botanical Garden features plants native to the province and cultivated plants suited to the local climate.  A trail system allows visitors to view a number of boreal habitats. The campus also has lots of green space - including ponds with walking paths, courtyards, as well as an outdoor basketball court and soccer field.

The Grand Concourse is 125 km integrated trail linking every major park, river, pond and green space in St. John’s, including Memorial’s Marine Institute and St. John’s campus. It is suitable for all ages.

Other facilities

Wifi is available throughout campus and is complimentary to all guests. Before connecting, guests require credentials from the reservations desk. Visiting students, staff, and faculty from other Eduroam affiliated universities are also able to avail of the eduroam wireless network.
